“My government is committed to promoting Human Right, Democracy and the Rule of Law”. With these words in response to the European Union Delegation on the presentation of their report, the outcome upon all the time and resources wasted by the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) was in theory and practice exactly what came out of the three-day dialogue after numerous interventions by the Commonwealth Secretariat, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU).
Of the twelve recommendations presented and signed by the APC, SLPP and development partners, each and every one of next appointed representatives have been entrusted with the responsibility to sit in a Committee and will make recommendations thereafter.
The parties and development parties have a period of six months to do so and it is left with President Bio to make a final decision on behalf of his government’s final position whether to agree or disagree.
To simplify the meaning of the AU peace mediation ‘resolutions’, this means they are mere suggestions being made at that event.
To many, in this case, the resolutions pose no obligation to government and in fact will breed further grounds for references to more rectifications before final agreements are made. The question many are asking is why is the APC’s mammoth members and supporters angry over the outcome of the dialogue? Who confused them to believe that way? Do they have any knowledge of a sovereign State and its Constitution?
The outcome of the dialogue shows that there was nothing essential for reference to a re-run of the elections or counting of votes or else that would have given cause to defend our Sovereignty and the Constitutional State. The mistake that the APC did was that it misinterpreted sovereignty to give way to irrational propaganda. It also misinforms its gross membership that there has never been a country where, after an elections is over, with those elections being supervised by its own mandated local institution, that is Electoral Commission, and later it turned out to be that ‘international blocs’ unseat a government that is declared a winner.
That, the main opposition has taken a journey that has never started anywhere in the world over and this attempt will de-popularize the APC amongst its supporters or voting population. They now say that their Executives are weak, lack focus and in fact lack visionary skills. Another 2028 defect, according to many, in the Elections ahead has begun to showcase itself, and many people are now contemplating which political party among the two is vulnerable and these concerns among supporters are resulting to waves of sharp charges or criticisms. Political commentators have even begun to predict that come 2028 multi-tier elections, the APC will experience a ‘big voters defects’ in the north-west and north-east to triple results achieved by the SLPP in the June 24, 2023 general elections.
Indeed, from all quarters of the APC I had visited, confidence is lost. For many, now that President Bio remains ever unmoved upon all the threats he has received from the APC party but for the good of the nation, the question many people ask now is: Would he [President Bio ] say yes to some resolutions or all or categorically say no to them to teach APC a lesson for? Or as Sierra Leone exists as a nation that is guided by a Constitution should H.E President Maada Bio respect the laws of the land and the principles of the rule of law which is above everybody?
