Report reaching this medium indicates that the life of one Abu Bakar Bah of 55 Wolf Street, Macdonald, Waterloo, Tombu Highway, is in serious trouble for allegedly associating himself with homosexual, lesbian and gay activities.
Addressing a news conference, a civil society activist, Mohamed Lahai said Abu Bakar started his sexual activities with his male partner named Philip who they met in Pride In Equality Association (IGBT) contrary to the laws of Sierra Leone and started doing the unaccepted act.
The country’s law states that anyone arrested, charged to Court and found guilty for practicing lesbianism, homosexual or gay related activities will be sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labour. Various youth groups and secret society members have threatened to kill Abu Bakar is seen for involving in homosexual and gay related activities.
Lahai told journalists that both Abu Bakar and Philip have been practicing homosexual since 2015 contrary to the laws of Sierra Leone and against the wish of their parents.
He said on the 1st April 2017, Philip and Abu Bakar were caught playing love, kissing and romancing against the wish of their parents. He said the two were humiliated and later expelled from Njala University.
He said they were later handed over to the Bo Police Division where they were investigated and charged to Court. He said the two suspects were detained for nights without food and no statements obtained from them.
Lahai said Abu Bakar and Philip were found guilty and sentenced to one year imprisonment each. He said Abu Bakar was later released on the 4th September 2017 while Philip was reported to have died in the cell.
As if that was not enough, Abu Bakar was also attacked with stones and sticks by irate youths who threatened to kill him for his involvement in homosexual activities. He was again arrested and charged to Court and sentenced to eighteen months imprisonment.
Lahai said the intervention of the Pride In Equality Association enable them to contact the Legal Aid Board headed by one Madam Fatmata. The Board which comprises human rights defenders intervened and Abu Bakar was later released on the 27th June 2018.
The Civil Society activist disclosed that the 26th December of every year is a public holiday in Sierra Leone. He said in commemoration of that holiday, a football match between members of IGBT in Bo versus IGBT in Freetown was organized. The objective was to raise the much needed awareness for government to recognize them so that they can have freedom to operate in the country.
He said they were seriously attacked by the security forces which resulted to the death of one man, while others sustained serious injuries. He said Abu Bakar and other youths were again arrested by the security forces which prompted the intervention of the Pride In Equality Association again and they were later released on one condition that he should never been seen anywhere in the country, because they the police themselves were also bribed to help them escape from the country, something beyond their profession and tantamount to dismissal and a lifetime sentence.
The continuous harassment, intimidation and threat to his life prompted him to escape to an unknown destination and since then his whereabouts remains unknown.
Meanwhile the police have declared Abu Bakar Bah wanted and have called on the general public to contact the nearest police station if seen as a reward price will be given to anyone who will help the Police leading to his arrest.
