Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to The Gambia, H.E. Martha Kanagbo, met with renewable energy executives Dennis Elverir (CEO, AIC Green Energy) and Ahmet Yalcin (CEO, MILRES Wind Energy) to discuss establishing a windmill manufacturing plant in Sierra Leone.
During the briefing, at the Sierra Leone Embassy in the Gambia, on 16th, July 2025 Mr. Elverir introduced Mr. Ahmet and both expressed their willingness to collaborate with the government of Sierra Leone in establishing a Windmill Manufacturing Factory in the country.
Significantly, this proposed partnership comes with no financial obligation on the part of the government. The factory is envisioned to serve not only Sierra Leone but also as a renewable energy hub for West Africa, enhancing regional energy sustainability.
The partners emphasized their commitment to supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 7— affordable and clean energy and expressed interest in providing solar-powered grid connection and battery storage solutions as part of a hybrid energy system. These solutions are aimed at bridging the existing power deficit and improving energy access nationwide.
In addition, they offered to provide competitive pricing, diverse energy options, and expressed strong interest in technology transfer, capacity building, and the creation of employment opportunities for Sierra Leonean youth.
However, the CEOs highlighted the need for a government-issued financial guarantee to initiate the project. They also proposed that international financial institutions such as the EXIM Bank or the African Development Bank could act as oversight bodies to ensure transparency and efficiency in project implementation.
H.E Ambassador Kanagbo, giving the ongoing energy challenges facing the country, this proposal presents a strategic opportunity. The partners have also shown interest in the potential privatization of the energy sector, which could further lower energy costs and enhance service delivery.
Considering the scope, potential impact, and low financial risk associated with this project, it is recommended that the government engage these partners further, facilitate a feasibility study, and consider providing the necessary guarantees to move the initiative forward.
