The Deputy Leader of the All Peoples Congress (APC) Party in Parliament, Hon. Daniel Koroma has pleaded with the Chairlady of the Market Women Association to enable the conduct of a peaceful protest in support of Members of Parliament.
He stated that the protest should be conducted before the UN General Assembly in September next month.
According to Hon Koroma the protest should be titled ‘’Hands off our honourables, remove 77 (1k)’’ in the Constitutional process.
He pointed out that Section 77 k is stagnating the work of parliamentarians and that the Constitutional review Secretariat should get rid of it of that portion in the constitution.
He underscored that the demostration is because the constitution of Sierra Leone does not allow MPs to stand for their people, but for their political parties.
He revealed that the 77(1K) in the constitution of Sierra Leone which talked about anti-party activities is affecting the SLPP MPs more than ever before.
He stated that MPs are doing secret ballots vote, but with Section 77(1K) in the law book provides that there is no secret ballots of which it makes it worse for MPs.
Hon. Koroma is also completely against the removal of the jury system in the country’s law book.
The MP has also urged the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party SLPP led by President Bio to bring back the Jury System into the country’s law book (Constitution).
Hon. Koroma made the submissions on Tuesday 27th August, 2024 at Bintumani Conference Centre during Hall meetings organised by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education.
The deputy leader encouraged every Sierra Leone to take party and asked for his message to be relayed to President Maada Bio.
He said in his capacity as Deputy Leader of the opposition party , he maintained that President Bio may not append his signature to the bill regarding the removal of the jury System in our law book.
He added that President Bio is a human right activist and he may not sign such a bill.
With the support of her Mrs. Fatima Bio, President will not sign the bill of the removal of the Jury System, asserting that one does not need to pass the Basic Examination Certificate Exams (BECE) to understand the implications of when someone charged with treason and then that person is being tried by a judge alone.
Making reference to the recent treason trial, he said, the verdict was passed by jury and if that judgement was done by a judge alone, the public would have been judged that a particular judge who passed verdict base on President Bio’s command.
