The long anticipated dialogue between the incumbent Sierra Leone’s People Party (SLPP) and the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) on Wednesday October 18th, 2023 ended at the Bintumani Hotel with recommendations made to the Sierra Leone government with an ultimatum of six months to consider its final position.
According to the Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh who led the government delegation, the SLPP, APC and development partners were each given the opportunity to choose its members who will represent them in a committee which will be set up to ensure their adherence to the recommendations agreed upon by both parties.
Dr. Sengeh recalled that Sierra Leone has had a similar experience after the 11 years of war when the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was set-up to mediate among groups which resulted in achieving peace.
The Chief Minster further that the recommendations will be of vital reference to future elections.
He expressed gratitude to all those who participated in the process. Most noticeable among the demands made by the APC was the release of all those who were arrested and detained at the Pademba Road Correctional Center for allegedly taking part in previous protests.
Pa Morlai Turay, who is a member of the APC, says that he is not happy with the outcome as he was hoping that the June 24 multitier elections will be re-run, the votes counted, MPs elect but still on boycott compensated and President Bio apologies to the nation. For Dr. Sengeh, he called on the APC to calm their supporters, noting that the Constitution is Supreme in Sierra Leone.
