President Julius Maada Bio, has on Saturday January 20th 2024, told members of parliament of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) that he would get involved in parliament’s current issue, this week to try and resolve it once and for all.
The president said he had been busy with other important things but would get involved this time to try and resolve the issue that is fraught with the legislature.
His statement follows an Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) investigation into alleged corruption cases in the House of Parliament.
Recently, the Clerk of Parliament, Hon. Umar Paran Tarawally, and his wife were being investigated by the ACC for alleged corruption.
And the Commission in a press release stated that the wife of the Clerk of Parliament, Mrs. Abibatu Tarawally, had begun paying the money she’d been collecting as salary over the years.
The Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Dr. Abass Bundu, recently said on social media that there was convincing evidence of a conflict of interest, embezzlement, and corruption in the administration of parliament which the ACC was investigating.
Bio told the SLPP law makers that they are one family, noting that it is better to discuss their differences together rather than going to the social media to make regrettable statements.
He pointed out that the differences must not separate them and promised to engage party members at district level to address outstanding issues and share positive ideas for the good of the country and SLPP.
“You will be getting many of such gatherings. I have to go around the country to talk to party people,” he said.
President Bio stressed that the development of Sierra Leone, peace and progress and democracy depends on their party.
“The bigger picture is Sierra Leone, he said, adding that “without us the SLPP, Sierra Leone has no future.”
The people of Sierra Leone are patiently waiting to see which kind of intervention the president will be making as his government takes seriously, corruption, as his flagship programme.
Quiet recently, the Public Service Commission conducted a head count of all staff working in parliament which has revealed several things, a move to addressing parliament’s current challenges.
The leader of the opposition in parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, had earlier called on the clerk of parliament, to step aside to until the Anti-Corruption Commission completes its investigation.
