For most Sierra Leoneans who felt grossly cheated in the 2023 election, they hold the view that the survival of democracy in Sierra Leone today hangs on a single thread.
However, COPPP says it is their considered view that the SLPP regime will do everything it takes to delay or prevent the committee from doing its work.
They say there is so much uncertainty over its possible outcomes and the government will obviously be weighing the pros and the cons of going ahead.
“Among other things, this government is being haunted by the ghosts of those election “irregularities”, “statistical inconsistencies” and “statistical improbabilities” detected by elections observers which, if unearthed, may end up exposing Mohamed Konneh and his ECSL as the villains that dressed up the current government “in borrowed robes,” it said.
“No emperor wants his nakedness to be exposed.”
But the public looks forward to a successful outcome where their questions will be answered such as “Where are the polling station results?”
Its members wished that the tripartite committee is seen to work in the interest of sanity and credibility in future elections.
COPPP had proposed to the tripartite committee to have immediate access to the RRFs so that the RR forms are included in their deliberations.
It also suggested that the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) Act be reviewed with a view to identifying and expunging its powers to de-register younger political parties or to limit their capacity for growth. COPPP had requested tthe tripartite committee to consider the particular cases of the National Progressive Democrat (UDP), Unity Party (UP) that were prevented by the PPRC and the ECSL from taking part in the 2023 elections. The coalition had asked the Tripartite Committee to investigate the cases of PDP Sorbeh, CDP, PLP, ADP and C4C with a view to preventing a recurrence of such discriminatory practice against the smaller parties. The political parties’ coalition, COPPP, had asked for the District Block Proportional Representation (PR) system be dissolved, adding that the PR is killing the principle of pluralism and multi-party in democratic elections.
