Many political pundits have been drawing the attention of every Sierra Leonean either big or small about the political atmosphere in the country, and envisaged the results even before the elections were conducted on the 24th June, 2023.
With the view that democracy has no alternative, and it is the bed rock to every government and it must be respected at every given time.
Without Democracy, the three arms of government, the Legislature, Executive and Judiciary will not function properly because they enable the democratic process in every facet of society to thrive.
The International Community should not sit-by and watch democracy being put in to the mud, because it is a firm conviction that government changes but democracy remains the same.
So, as a matter of fact, this is a test case for the European Union (EU), United States of America (USA), the United Kingdom (UK) to name but a few International Bodies.
It could be recalled in 1992, when the Sierra Leone Army (SLA) fighting against the rebels stormed Freetown demanding for their ration from the All Peoples Congress (APC) government of President Rtd. Maj. Gen Joseph Saidu Momoh by then, which at the end turned out to be a Coup d’état against his government.
After they successfully overthrown the APC government, they formed a government which was named as the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC), a Council in which the president re-elected, Dr. Julius Maada Bio was part and parcel of and reached the height as Second in-Command at the time.
Some of the reasons the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) advanced to the International Community at the time, were bad governance, corruption and the suppression of the democratic process in the country at the time.
To the dismay of the people, all that the NPRC were preaching against is what is currently prevailing today in the country under this dispensation; corruption, bad governance, suppression of democracy.
Corruption today is nothing to write home about, and bad governance is at its highest peak, suppression of democratic principles in the country is the order of the day.
People are not at all comfortable with the present situation of things, as what the NPRC kicked against in 1992 is what people are seeing today under the leadership of the current Head of State.
The big question people are asking is why was APC over-thrown for corruption, bad-governance and suppression of democratic principles?
However, this people are of the view that it all started from the days of the late Sir Milton Striesby Margai, Albert Margai, Siaka Probyn Stevens, Joseph Saidu Momoh, Valentine Esegrabo Melvin Strasser, Julius Maada Bio, Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma and Dr. Julius Maada Bio again, which is a complete meaning that no condition is permanent under the sun.
Political commentators are of the view that no condition is permanent citing the cases of former military rulers, President Yayah Jammeh of Banjul, The Gambia. He was like a demi-god in Banjul and where is he now today, Samuel K. Doe of Liberia where is he today?
The Bible says “Do on to others as you may like others do on to you.”
The people are querying the present administration whether they will like the main opposition, APC do to them as they have already done to them by muzzling their democratic space.
No condition is permanent and what goes around comes, the world is cyclical.
This is a complete test case for the International Community and the world at large, asking them if they will sit and watch democracy and peace being put into the mud.
