Thanks to the Late Dr. Alhahji Ahmad Tejan Kabbah for creating so many institutions for democracy to flourish indeed, democracy did flourish at the time.
A good number of Sierra Leoneans are saying the SLPP of yesterday, is not the SLPP of today whiles others say it’s the same however, it a discussion for another day.
One of those institutions is the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC). The PPRC has been very much instrumental in trying to put all registered Political Parties on track including the All Peoples Congress (APC) in the interest of democracy.
It is rather unfortunate that some other institutions are not creating a level playing field.
One such institutions is the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone( ECSL),the ECSL is always at the center of controversies since the hand-picked Commissioner took-over as Chairman.
Accusations and counter accusations have always been levied against the work of the Commission, ranging from registration of voters, displaying of voters list and many other things inconsistencies.
The Commission is at the moment pushing very hard for the PR system of election to the people of Sierra Leone.
The general citizenry are very much un-comfortable with the PR system of election but the ECSL is still resistant towards the PR system of voting.
Democratic Institutions are meant to strengthen the democratic process of a country.
Under the day light watch of the SLPP New Direction, institutions already created by past Presidents have been destroyed completely in the name of bad politics.
This is the more reason why the current Speaker of Parliament Dr. Abass Chrenor Bundu was very quick to distance himself during the controversial debate on the Commission of Inquiry (COI) were he said that “what goes around comes around” a statement that did not go down well for some SLPP surporters.
The Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA), Sierra Leone Road Safety (SLRSA) and many more are not fit to exsist.
The same goes to some Civil Society Organizations, good number of them are operatives of the system.
The late President Ahmad Kabbah meant well for this country but little did the people know today that, some institutions are politically driven by the government of the day.
