The Principal of Extra Mile Charity School, Wusu Kargbo has outlined the outstanding achievements of the school, proudly stating that the school has exceeded expectations both in terms of academic performance and impact on society.
He made the disclosure on Sunday 16th February during the celebration of the school’s first Foundation and Thanksgiving service in the school’s Goderich Compound in Freetown.
Extra Mile Charity School has consistently ranked as one of the top-performing schools in the country, recording outstanding performance in public exams.
Among its proudest accomplishments is the performance of its “Nine Legends”—the first batch of students to write the WASSCE in 2022.
“These students made history with their stellar performance, gaining the school national acclaim from the Ministry of Basic Education,” he disclosed.
Kargbo proudly reported that 90% of these pioneer students are now finishing university studies, both in Sierra Leone and abroad.
In a touching gesture of giving back, three of them have returned to teach at the school, so that the cycle of knowledge and opportunity is transferred to future generations.
A School Based on Community Support and Charity Extra Mile Charity School is a state-sponsored school offering free junior and senior secondary school education to underprivileged boys and girls in Goderich and its environs.
Unlike most schools, it offers free breakfast, uniforms, books, and notebooks so that none of the children lack the basic necessities to excel.
The numbers of enrollment keep growing, and currently, there are 185 students at the junior and senior levels. This year, 22 students will sit for the WASSCE and 25 for the BECE, upholding the school’s reputation for academic distinction. Despite its success, the school remains plagued by problems of teacher attrition and resource limitations.
Principal Kargbo called on stakeholders and donors to remain unwavering in their support, citing that each contribution makes a tangible difference in the lives of these students.
A Call to Action A number of dignitaries, among them Mr. Samuel Garus, Madam Oluyemi C.J. Pratt, and former student Musa Alusine Kanu, gave inspirational speeches, all of which resonated with the urgent appeal for continued support from donor partners. They called upon goodwill individuals, organizations, and the government to invest in the future of Sierra Leonean children by financing projects such as Extra Mile Charity School. As we commemorate the first Foundation and Thanksgiving Day of the school, it is a testament to what is possible through vision, compassion, and collective efforts. The journey to excellence has only just started, and with your sustained support, Extra Mile Charity School will continue to be a beacon of hope, transforming lives one student at a time.
