Dr. Philip John Kanu, Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Milton Magai University Goderich, has dragged his Lecturer Tejan Sheik Rogers for allege cyber- bullying against him on social media.
Rogers made another appearance before Magistrate Santigie Bangura of Pademba Road Court No.2 on Monday 17 March 2025.
Rogers was arriaged before the court on a count charge of cyber stalking contrary to Section 44(2)(b) of the Cyber Security and Crime Act of 2001.
The indictment state that Rogers between November 1 and 30 2022 in Freetown, through social media used his Whatsapp number as he created and posted recorded audios and text messages which led to the effects on cyber stalking and bulling system network on his computer system in a Whatsapp group called “Maada Must Stay Campaign” and such have the likelihood to damage the lecturer’s character.
Lead in evidence by the prosecutor CPS Joan Bull, the witness Bockarie Aiah Sillah said he is a lecturer at Milton Magai University, adding that he knew the complainant professor Philip John Kanu as colleague lecturer.
Witness Sillah further that he knew the accused Rogers as a one time student but now as a colleague lecturer.
The witness further said he recalled on the 1 November, 2022, adding that accused Rogers started making audios messages about the vice chancellor that he was corrupt in finances and in the administration of the college.
He said Rogers usually send the voice messages on Whatsapp forum he also joined named “SLPP Milton Magai Technical University Branch”.
He said initially he decided to discuss the issues with Rogers as colleagues but the accused persistently was sending audios messages against the Vice Chancellor and Principal of the college.
Witness Sillah further in his testimony said that the audios messages also contained sexual harassment messages and he thus engaged Rogers to stop but he refused.
The witness continued that he felt so bad when listening to the audios messages of Rogers, thinking of the relationship between him and the complainant professor Kanu.
He said among the audios messages their names were also mentioned.
He further said that he made statements at the Adonkia police station and later made another statement at the Criminal Investigation’s Department headquarters.
During cross examination by defense counsel Zacharia Kanu, lecturer Sillah said he is a lecturer and has acted as register of the college in October 2023 right to August, 2024.
He further said, upon cross examination, that during the incident, he was the senior deputy register.
In answering further questions posed to him by defense counsel Kanu, lecturer Sillah said there has been very good relationship that has existed between lecturer Rogers and the Vice Chancellor, adding that lecturer Rogers published the voice notes he had made through his phone number.
He further agreed before the court that there is nothing before the court to show that the accused publish such voice notes.
In his further cross examination, lecturer Sillah said he did not have any personal grievances against the accused Rogers and that he has never published false information about the accused person.
A document was shown to him which he identified as Whatsapp group called “SLPP Milton Magai Technical University Branch where he confirmed his phone number 077705236 in the said document.
At this juncture, defense counsel Kanu wanted to tender the said documents but prosecutor Bull objected that the document is not original and the court did not know the source of the documents.
Defense counsel Kanu in reply said the documents is a conversations made in the group to which they are all part of it.
The defense was over ruled by the Magistrate.
The witness Sillah said after the release of the audios by Rogers he and another lecturer made a complain against the accused at the Adonkia police station, adding that the complain was not made based on the instructions of the Vice Chancellor Of the college.
Lecturer Sillah also in cross examination said amongst the many audio messages done by the accused he said the Vice Chancellor was corrupt, he does not administer justice and he does not have an O’Level certificate.
Witness Sillah while answering questions further said he knew about technology and montage which he said is cut and paste.
He said there is possibility for someone to cut and paste voice note of another person but the voice messages of these audios were authorized and published by the accused because he admitted to it and he has apologized.
At this juncture, defense counsel sought for an adjournment for continuation of cross examination.
The accused is on bail and the matter was adjourned to March 24th 2025.
