The leader of the opposition All People’s Congress APC in parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, says SLPP government “has lost ideas”.
Kargbo said the people of Sierra Leone deserve better lives but SLPP has brought untold suffering to them.
He said they’ve decided as members of parliament to inform the people on issues that are affecting the nation.
The leader informed the media that when the SLPP took over power they told the general public that they would reduce inflation rate from 15.4% from 2018 to a single digit but as of March 2024 the inflation rate was 41.6%.
Speaking on the issue of rice, he said SLPP had told the people that they were tired of buying rice at Nle 200, but now a bag of rice is over Nle 1,000.
He went further to say that in 2018 the SLPP met external debts at 17.9 but by 2023 they increased it to 54.1 trillion.
On cash loss, as of 2022 the SLPP lose an amount of 325 billion Leones which he said is the highest in the history of this country’s financial loss.
Hon Kargbo also stated that the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) is owing the Karpowership a colossal sum of money which is still not paid.
He said instead of them to reduce the tariffs of electricity for customers they’ve exponentially increased it to an imaginable price.
The MP also talked about fuel increase in the country which he said in their subsequent press briefings, they will bring experts that will look into the pricing formula.
Deputy Leader of the opposition, Hon. Daniel Koroma said that every activities of parliament are supposed to be championed by business committee.
But that committee, at the moment, is limping and which they are working to address.
On enactment of bills, he said, they are doing well in that area and at the moment, there is the criminal Procedure Act which needs the attention of the media and the general public.
The jury system might be cut down from 12 to 10, and 50 is not bad at all.
He commended the election of the speaker which he said that the constitution was strictly followed.
“So 19 MPs have the opportunity to identify issue in the Chamber, but the business committee was never taken seriously,” he explained.
The ECSL approval, he said, they were not consulted, and as such they were forced to walk out in protest of Mr Edmond Alpha’s approval.
He said there are plans for constitutional review, informing that omitting any letter from the said constitution needs two thirds majority.
He said they are ready to improve good democratic processes in the country.
National Secretary General of the party Lawyer Lansana Dumbuya also briefed journalists that the tripartite committee is working tirelessly to complete its work thus maintaining that they have submitted their Results and Reconciliation Form RRFs to the committee which are critically being looked into.
APC’s national publicity secretary, Sidi Yaya Tunis informed the gathering that after the 2023 election results were announced in June, they challenged the outcome and this led to the Bintumani communiqué and later now the tripartite committee.
Deputy Chairman of the APC, Ambassador Osman Foday Yanssaneh says that the APC is an alternative government.
He said that they were told by their political opponent that they will never hand over power to their party,APC and he referred to such statement as tantamount to chaos.
“The tripartite is a collective effort to salvage this country from total chaos.”
“Our people are worried that after June 19 there will be chaos,”Yassaneh said.
The PR is a calculation of what they did in 2018 by removing 10 of our members from Parliament, he recalled.
He said just after the election they called for the removal of Mohamed Konneh and his commissioners but the SLPP had refused to listen to them.
