The Independent Commission of Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC) has declared September, a Month of Peace and National Cohesion in Sierra Leone.
The Commission, in a press release, issused out on Thursday, that the declaration is aimed at encouraging cooperation and commitment in fostering a culture of peace, non-violence, and national unity which aligns with the international Day of Peace (IDP).
The release noted that the United Nations General Assembly, established in 1981 and strengthened in 2001, unanimously declared “September 21” a day that signifies the promotion of peace, nonviolence and ceasefire globally, with this year’s theme being “Cultivating a Culture of Peace”.
“Our collective efforts of building a peaceful and cohesive society have not been over-sighted as we have made significant gains in the Global Peace Index (GPI) and has rewardingly earned a non-permanent seat an Chairmanship at the United Nation Security Council (UNSC) running for the month of August.
“This milestone achievement reflects our collective action towards building resilience and transforming our society into one that is equaled, just, equitable, and inclusive,” the release stated.
In commemorating this year’s IDP in the promotion of peace and national cohesion, the ICPNC, together with its partners, is getting ready to organize a 30-day peace activism countrywide. The stride will include peace walks, debates, symposia, music, and festivals.
