Reports reaching us indicate that a young woman, Amie Jenny Turay has found herself in a very difficult position after outrightly rejecting to take the position of her late mother Mama Isatu Bangura as a senior member of the Bondo secret society as the society’s rules demand.
Until Amie’s mother’s death on 30th July 2021, she was a high ranking Sowei.
Immediately after her demise, some senior elders of the society approached Amie and informed her that as the eldest daughter of her late mother she is to take her mother’s position as their society laws demand.
But given the health implications during initiation, which sometimes cause devastating injuries to victims and death in certain cases, frightened Amie to instantly deny the desperate member’s request.
Regarding Amie’s denial of replacing her late mother as direct violation of their norms and insult to them as elders, they decided to teach her a bitter lesson in her life.
So during the funeral ceremony of her late mother at Batkanu Town, Karene District, northern Sierra Leone, these irate members decided to forcefully take Amie to their initiation bush (Shrine) to undergo the initiation rites.
While in the bush, they tied her and mercilessly beat her until she became weak and submissive. The young woman according to information was also forced to watch the initiation process of other initiates but was scared to do so due to the profuse bleeding. Amie became even more frightened because the initiators showed no mercy which resulted to the death of one of their victims; a very young child following an incessant bleeding.
On the fifth day in her captivity, Ms. Amie Turay miraculously escaped at midnight and braved it through the thick forest until she finally go to the main road where she luckily met a truck driver who assisted her to the capital, Freetown.
When the Bondo members discovered that Amie had escaped, they immediately mounted a manhunt for her. After they searched everywhere in vain, they immediately declared her wanted because they fear that she will expose their secret she saw in their shrine. Since then they have been on the lookout for her.
According to reports, Amie made a formal report to the Batkanu police station on 4th August 2021; however, sources within the confines of Police revealed to this medium that her report was turned down as the law enforcement agency instead told her that the matter hinges on highly sensitive tradition.
The Police added that they are powerless to pursue such matter. It’s gathered that the police instead disappointedly advised Madam Turay to find a safe place to go.
Sources added that Ms. Turay’s escape was facilitated by a lady who realized that the situation was getting tense, advised her to find a safer location.
Credible sources informed this medium that, Ms. Turay received disturbing calls that irate Bondo members were searching everywhere across the country for her. Realizing the danger if she is caught, Madam Turay sources went on did not waste any time but to vanish to an undisclosed location and her whereabouts still remain unknown.
