The wise bird has been reliably informed that, the Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has deeply criticized the government of President Maada Bio for its proposed plan to divide the capital of Freetown into two separate cities.
The news to divide Freetown has sparked mixed reactions in the main opposition APC party, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), school going children, lawyers, teachers and other workers across the country.
According to information gathered by the bird, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr has expressed concern over the news that, Cabinet had approved the division without consulting the people for them to understand the reason.
The Mayor however, highlighted the advantages and disadvantages of the division.
She also stated that, dividing a city at a time like this would exacerbate co-ordination problems that will cause worse service delivery.
The report further states that, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr also talked about the financial implication, noting that, revenue collection is uneven across the country particularly in the capital Freetown.
She also pointed out that, the central government has yet to disburse tied grants for 2025.
However, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr acknowledged the president’s legal authority to declare a new location.
She further urged the Minister to take into consideration the population data, geographic constraints and future growth. The city mother’s concerns clearly show that, she is not in support of the division.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr said dividing Freetown into two cities with two local councils will automatically affect the delivery of service to residents, it will also add unnecessary pressure to the already dying economy, more pressure to the budget.
As the bird does not know everything, he went out to sound the opinion of senior citizens and most of those he came in contact with were in full support of the Mayor.
The bird will love to see how this will works..
