Following the resignation of the former Speaker of the House of Parliament Dr. Abass Bundu, there have been public mixed feelings on the issue.
The Speaker’s resignation has shifted the attention of majority of the both the ruling and opposition MPs.
The question now that MPs ask is what really might have led to his resignation.
The resignation has led to more questions than answers in the political landscape of Sierra Leone.
The former Speaker is an erudite politician in term of politics both nationally and internationally.
It be recalled that the erstwhile Speaker was forcefully selected by the incumbent party in 2018.
Dr Bundu was the Speaker of the House when the suspended Clerk of Parliament, who is also the administrative head of the House Hon. Umar Paran Tarawalie alleged instructed police officers from Operations Service Division (OSD), police wing to beat and chase out opposition MPs out of the well.
The skirmishes erupted at the time left some opposition MPs including Hon. Mohamed Bangura from Karene District to be hospitalized for few weeks or month.
In addition, it was under the leadership of Dr Chenor Abass Bundu the 10 elected opposition were “unconstitutionally removed” from their seats and they were immediately replaced by other politicians of the ruling.
He was also serving as speaker during the Bintumani 3 conference which many believe never yielded any good result.
As the third gentleman in the country, he did not condemn or make public statements on some of the ill- treatments meted against the opposition MPs.
In his tenure in Parliament, the ruling party passed numerous controversial bills into laws that don’t resonate with the people of Sierra Leone.
Being a Speaker of the House, several opposition PMs had been arbitrarily arrested and detained at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Pademba Road on countless occasions.
As one of the senior most gentlemen, he wouldn’t say a word neither made a public statement condemning any bad act.
Dr Bundu is the oldest and longest serving politician in Sierra Leone.
In a press release dated 16th April, 2024, from the State House, President Bio has affirmed accepting the resignation letter from the Speaker of the House.
The release was available public domain on Monday 16th April 2024.
Recently, it was alleged that the Clerk of Parliament Hon. Umar Paran Tarawalie and the speaker were at each other’s throats that was immediately when the corruption scandal was unearthed by a local online TV.
The allegation was that Hon. Umaru Paran Tarawalie as the administrative head of the House Parliament employed his wife, Abibatu Paran Tarawalie as a Human Resources Officer and she was receiving salaries without working for it.
Dr Bundu as the head of the Parliamentary Service Commission was not happy about the redundancy of 70 workers of Parliament who were allegedly replaced by Clerk’s relatives and family friends.
Former Speaker Dr Bundu condemned the act considering the number of Sierra Leoneans that came jobless at that time.
On behalf of the House, the former Speaker tendered an apology to Sierra Leoneans for whatever wrong they were accused of.
There were several ill activities that were happening under the leadership former Speaker in the Well if it would have been a decent politician should have resigned, but he did not.
It makes one to wonder what really might have led to his latest resignation, some critics asked.
The wrongly removal of Hon. Mohamed Bangura from the ECOWAS’ Parliament was said to have angered the ruling government.
And Mr Bangura blamed the former speaker to have masterminded his removal which was pronounced by his party, the opposition, APC.
