After the June 24 Multitier Elections, All is expected to be well now with the gimmicks we have heard from members and supporters of the Main Opposition All People’s Congress Party (APC). At first, they expressed and circulated rumours that the International Community has condemned the elections in unanimity and another will be held, they hastily issued a parliamentary boycott notice now attached with signs of disobedience as true APC members stands to be defiant, they interrupted the state opening of the 6th parliament of the Republic by assembling a caucus of their elected MP’s elsewhere, they all along expressed optimum despite the legitimate transfer of power to President Bio, now they wonder, upon all these, what have they achieved?
In aggregate, then, President Bio boosts many of the structural conditions that typically favour democratic development. So what is holding the opposition up? The answer lies in the more profligate variables that shape the balance of power between the SLPP designed of the current state and the democratic aspiration of society.
Whatever their intensions may have been, the SLPP government never managed to impose a full blown dictatorship on the APC Party. Moreover, the APC current array of assumptions is missing some of its original endowment most importantly, the APC original goals of spreading and deepening hatred speech throughout heavily and perhaps the whole world is extinguished both at home and abroad.
These matters because the APC which can sustain a revolutionary project that morally justifies their illegitimacy have a much greater probability of de-popularizing their power. In the APC’s decade’s governance, their leaders championed such an, ideology and enjoyed considerable balance of support in doing so, today however, this ideological creed has been relatively superseded by reforms from its opponents which is the SLPP. The solid electoral backing that the reform orientated showed how firmly the Sierra Leonean society rejected APC’s ideological struggles.
Then too, the APC never had a charismatic leader at the helm. Ernest Bai Koroma was a towering figure and Chief ideologist of a Siaka Stevens replica. Ernest regime failed to export their form of government and won no credible recognition for work well done. The blatant and increasing corruption of the party hierarchy who preached piety and other wordiness while notoriously pilling up vast fortunes cast yet more discredit on APC’s ideological legitimacy.
What is clear is that momentum for change has showed since 2018, rather, strategic decisions that the reformist incumbent has made over the last five years have contributed most directly to the current lull. Most of President Bio’s appointees have chosen to pursue political change by playing within the existing rules of the game. They are reformers not transformers of unpatriotic for gradual and peaceful change within the existing system is hardly surprising. Today, the strategy has succeeded and rode a huge wave of popular support. President Bio was also lucky, in that, by placing the election the rubric of change versus continuity. He founded an easy way through to tap overwhelming public support.
MORE TO COME.
