The outspoken Member of Parliament representing the people of Tonkolili district, Hon. Aruna Papay Larkoh has used the occasion on the debate of the Appropriation Act 2024 at the Chamber of Parliament to lambast the government for its poor handling of the economy.
The Member of Parliament in his contribution to the debate, referred to the budget as a killer budget; citing several factors he thought would endanger the livelihood of the people of Sierra Leone when implemented.
Hon. Larkoh said the contributions of the ruling government MPs on the budget-undermined development.
He called on the government to listen to the people and noted that the people are suffering due to economic hardship. “Use your nationalistic lens to address the budget,” he warned.
On the 5% tax imposition on rice, the charismatic MP alluded to the fact that it would create more burdens on the citizens of the country and advised the government to look for another alternative to ease the suffering of the people of Sierra Leone.
On the carwash project, the MP said it is not good for the youth, and implored the government to do more to empower the youth. “Magburaka has a tech-voc training institute for youths that can accommodate many youths in Sierra Leone to get technical skills that would help them develop their skills,” he said and went on to note that, unfortunately, that institute has been abandoned without due consideration.
Hon. Larkoh zoomed through the planned project of Robinkie in Kholifa Mayoussor- Mamutha Chiefdom as a fine project and urged government to increase budget allocation to the Ministry of Youth Affairs so that they can achieve that project and youths around that vicinity would be gainfully employed.
The pragmatic Hon. Larkoh called on the government of Sierra Leone to be prudent in their expenditures, going through the 2024 Appropriation Act. More particularly money allocated to ECSL for 2024 fiscal year that have huge allocation.
He said he sees that allocation as a waste of the country’s resources and called for a rethink of that allocation to ECSL because they do not have big elections ahead of them.
