The Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Hon. Sidi Mohamed Tunis on Tuesday 24th September 2024 at his Parliament office, officially confirmed his participation as the Distinguished Guest of Honor for the Fundraising Lunch and Turning of the Sod ceremony for the construction of the University of Makeni (UNIMAK) Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Office and Students’ Resource Center in fulfilment of the SRC we Want Manifesto.
This announcement came after a meeting between Hon. Tunis and SRC President Edmond Alim B. Fornah, where the speaker graciously consented to attend and support the project, scheduled for October 2024.
The SRC President expressed deep gratitude to Hon. Tunis for his ongoing contributions to the development of Sierra Leone and his unwavering commitment to supporting humanity. President Fornah emphasized that the involvement of such a prominent national figure signals a major boost to the university’s efforts to enhance student welfare and learning opportunities.
Hon. Tunis, in response, thanked President Fornah for the invitation, pledging his full support for the initiative.
He expressed his enthusiasm about the project, stating, “These are the types of activities I love to be part of because they promote education for sustainable development.
Without education, I wouldn’t have been where I am today,” he said.
Hon. Tunis further emphasized the critical role that the SRC Office and Resource Center would play in advancing the educational experience of students.
The SRC Office and Students’ Resource Center project is a visionary initiative by the University of Makeni’s Student Representative Council President Edmond Fornah aimed at providing a dedicated space for student’s leadership and academic enrichment.
The SRC Office will serve as a hub for student’s governance, ensuring that students have an organized platform to represent their interests, address concerns, and actively participate in university decision-making processes.
The Students’ Resource Center will be a multi-functional facility, equipped with, printing equipments, internet access, and a wide range of academic resources to support students’ learning and research activities.
In addition to his role as Distinguished Guest of Honor, Hon. Tunis has pledged to make a personal donation toward the construction of the facility. His involvement has not only added prestige to the event but also underscored his dedication to supporting education as a cornerstone for sustainable development.
The groundbreaking ceremony in October 2024 will mark the beginning of a transformative journey for UNIMAK students.
