The opposition Member of Parliament from Port Loko District, Hon. Ibrahim Aziz Bangura, says,“Nothing has happened three years down the line on the Lungi bridge construction.”
He made the disclosure on Wednesday 6th November 2024 in the Chamber of Parliament.
Hon Bangura said in 2021 President Bio speech mentioned about the construction of the Lungi bridge which contractors have been in the past and that they have said work will start. But nothing is mentioned about the Lungi Bridge construction in the 2024 President speech.
He said he is disappointed that the Presidential spokesperson, Alpha Khan to have also stated in an interview on a television that the Lungi Bridge Construction is not part of the President agenda, a statement he said is so embarrassing to the people of Port Loko District.
He said many electorates voted President Bio and the SLPP because of the Lungi Bridge, he, Mr Bio, had promised them, adding that the Lungi environs are facing serious challenges inspite of the fact that they host the only airport in the country.
The MP also spoke on the deplorable conditions of Lungi township roads and poor electricity supply which he said is affecting the livelihoods of the people.
He drew the attention of the speaker and government on the collapse of bridges in his communities.
He stated that the former government of Ernest Bia Koroma had done remarkably well in constructing the roads but expressed frustration over the neglect of the roads by the SLPP regime.
“If the town that hosts the only airport is consumed by darkness what the future holds for all. The airport vicinity should be elevated to make it beautiful,” he said.
He called for swift intervention of government to address the concerns of the masses.
In his submission to the debate, Hon. Abdulai Kamara from Western Area Urban said agriculture is a pillar of development and noted that the government is struggling to feed its people.
“Sierra Leonean people are very hungry,” he said, calling on for a speedy rice produce of the Tarma bum rice project.
He concluded by calling on the government to help and save the people from poverty.
