The August 10, 2022 protest in Sierra Leone left an indelible memory not only to those that participated in the protest, but also went down in the annals of history Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad will never forget in a hurry.
On that fateful day the capital city, Freetown and others parts in the northern region of Sierra Leone like Makeni and Kamakwie came to a standstill as protesters stage a peaceful demonstration in order to make their voices heard.
However, the protest culminated into disaster as police and other security apparatus were unable to control the mammoth crowd that descended across these towns.
The protesters accused the incumbent president Julius Maada Bio of his failure to address their plight as the prices of basic commodities skyrocket, the massive youth unemployment, no freedom of expression, unprecedented human rights abuse by known figures of the ruling SLPP government.
Among those whose suffered harrowing experience is a young Sierra Leonean named, Kelvin Umar Kamara who was allegedly accused of belonging to the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party.
According to reports gathered by the Africa24 newspaper, Kelvin our source says was a pro-APC supporter and was among the protesters that converged on August 10, 2022 to vent out their anger due to the unbearable economic hardship that engulfed the nation as many households cannot afford to have one square meal a day.
It was on this pretext that many Sierra Leoneans decided to come out in large numbers so that their concerns could be swiftly addressed by president Bio.
The August 10, 2022 turned ugly as scores of civilians and police officers were killed, due to the acrimonious fracas that ensued between protesters and security forces.
Kelvin our source went on was among those who persuaded many protesters to come out in large numbers to state their case.
Those who were seen participating actively like Kelvin came under fatal attacks by Lahai Lawrence Leema, Deputy Internal Affairs Minister who raided many homes of these protesters.
Report further stated that, those whose homes were raided were slaughtered in cold blood, some were fortunate to have escaped to an unknown location like Kelvin whose whereabouts remains a mystery.
As we went to press, intelligent reports monitored by the Africa 24 newspaper revealed that thugs loyal to SLPP are constantly searching for Kelvin and have promised to lynch him to death.
