Sources within the Sierra Leone Police have confirmed that Michael Kawuta Kargbo, Public Relations Officer of the Sierra Leone Parliament, has been declared wanted for allegedly harboring Captain T.L. Conteh, a key suspect in the failed coup attempt of November 26.
According to these sources, Captain T.L. Conteh had been a tenant at Kargbo’s residence, located at 10 College Road, Goderich, in the Western Area, since June 13, 2021. It is believed that Kargbo had been providing shelter to Conteh until the coup attempt.
Michael Kawuta Kargbo reportedly left Sierra Leone on July 15, 2024, to attend the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York, USA. The IPU forum is a key global event for parliamentarians, focusing on the assessment of progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It was during his absence that Kargbo was declared wanted by the authorities.
Police and military personnel raided Kargbo’s residence following the coup attempt, but he was not present. His whereabouts remain unknown, and there is speculation that he may face a possible treason trial if apprehended. Neighbors have confirmed that Captain T.L. Conteh had been staying at Kargbo’s residence, making Kargbo a person of significant interest in the ongoing investigation.
Rumors suggest that Kargbo’s departure from Sierra Leone was for official duties, but authorities have placed a bounty on any information leading to his arrest. Meanwhile, several military personnel and coup plotters have been killed during operations linked to the attempted coup, with others either in custody or still at large.
