As we celebrate Labor Day, let us recognize the vital contributions of every member of our workforce. The Adama Team Foundation is dedicated to promoting inclusivity for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the labor market. Our team greatly benefits from the talents and skills of employees with disabilities.
Unfortunately, many PWDs in Sierra Leone struggle to find meaningful employment and often resort to begging. I urge all employers in Sierra Leone to hire PWDs and embrace a diverse workplace that values unique skills and perspectives.
The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) Article 27 affirms the right of persons with disabilities to work on equal terms. It emphasizes the importance of protection against discrimination and the necessity of fair working conditions. Key provisions include promoting employment opportunities, ensuring reasonable accommodations, and supporting vocational rehabilitation.
Similarly, the International Labour Organization (ILO) advocates for decent employment for PWDs through awareness, engagement with employers, and enhancing employability through training. The ILO stresses the importance of creating inclusive workplaces not only as a human right but also as an economic necessity.
The ILO’s 2012 Global Employment Trends report indicated that the global jobs crisis had entered a more structural phase, making labor market imbalances increasingly difficult to resolve.
Section 2 of ILO 2012 highlights the ongoing global challenge of employment for PWDs despite significant progress in recent years. PWDs still face discrimination and encounter numerous barriers to employment. The ILO noted that approximately 470 million people with disabilities are of working age.
Section 3 addresses the human rights case for hiring PWDs, advocating for equal opportunities in the workplace and in a broader society.
Let us remember that PWDs are reliable employees, tend to have fewer workplace accidents, and are more likely to remain in their positions. Therefore, we must provide them with equal opportunities in the labor market.
Let’s champion change by promoting an inclusive labor force!
Have a restful Labour Day holiday!
