Travellers to and from Makeni-Kamakwe in Bombali and Karene districts have told Africa24 that the road will be cutoff in the next couple of months if the authorities concerned fail to address its bad condition.
Foday Melvin Samura, who has just returned from the district, told this press that to ply the route has become tough because of the road’s worsening condition which has made trucks and other vehicles carrying foodstuffs to those impoverish communities very difficult.
Kamakwe is the district headquarters of Karene which deserves better in terms of development including better roads as it is economically viable and contributing to national development.
He said the route is important for both business and agricultural activities that enhance the country’s development trajectory.
Samura pointed out that there are no signs from the authorities that they prepared to maintain the road, stating that by next month when heavy rains would have experienced the road will eventually become unmotorable.
Isata Sankoh, a businesswoman also informed this newspaper that the road condition has resulted to business slowdown.
“We are paying exorbitant fare due to the deplorable condition of the road. It takes a whole day, sometime two days on the road, to travel from Makeni to Kamakwei,” she stated.
A motorbike rider, Sulaiman Jalloh, said even to travel on to of motorbike along the road, is very difficult and that the potholes sometime prevent them from using the route.
They therefore, called on the government to pay attention to that part of the country to alleviate their sufferings.
