The Opposition Leader in Parliament, Hon Abdul Kargbo, has urged the Clerk of Parliament to step aside until the investigation into paliament’s alleged corruption case is concluded.
In his tweet, the opposition Leader of Parliament stated that, “I am shocked at the revelations of abuse of office by the Clerk of Parliament. The repayment at ACC indicates an admission of guilt. To preserve the sanctity of Parliament and to spare the House further embarrassment, I ask that he steps aside to allow the ACC to conclude its work”.
In the past days there were growing calls from members of the public for the Clerk of Parliament to be sacked, arrested and prosecuted for abuse of office.
In recent times, Paran Tarawally, was connected to an earlier scandal involving his acquisition of fake degree from one of the dominion colleges somewhere in Waterloo.
Paran Tarawally was also previously involved in a highly controversial incident where he utilized security forces to forcibly remove 10 Members of Parliament from the opposition in the Well of Parliament.
His unprecedented actions demonstrated his disregard for democratic norms and raised serious questions about his commitment to democratic process.
Many say it is crucial that steps be taken to prevent such abuses of power and ensure the independence and integrity of Parliament.
In it press release, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has investigated the alleged corruption case against the Clerk of Parliament and his Wife.
According to the release, the ACC wishes to inform the general public that it had commenced investigation into corruption allegations against the Clerk of Parliament, Hon Paran Tarawally and his wife, Mrs. Abibatu Tarawally.
The release said the Commission is investigating allegations that the Clerk of Parliament employed his wife without due process and that since the said employment, Mrs. Abibatu Tarawally, had not been reporting for duties but was receiving salaries. This raises serious questions of ‘conflict of interest’ and abuse of position by the Clerk of Parliament.
According to the ACC release, while investigation continues, as a condition of her bail indicates, Mrs. Abibatu Tarawally, has returned the sum of one hundred and thirty thousand (New) Leones (Le130,000) from the one Hundred and fifty-six Thousand (New) Leones (156,000) she received as salary for the 10 months she was on payroll, according to records obtained from the Accountant-General.
Meanwhile, the release stated that, Hon. Paran Umar Tarawally and Mrs Abibatu Tarawally are on bail pending further investigations into the matter.
