The National Coordinator for the National Elections Watch (NEW), Rev. James Lahai has admitted that, according to the National Elections Watch (NEW) Presidential Election Projection Results, the presidential candidate for the Sierra Leone People’s party (SLPP), Dr. Julius Maada Bio scored 50.4% and the presidential candidate for the All People’s Congress party (APC), Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara received a voting percentage of 49.20 %, adding that there is inconsistency in the presidential result announced by the Chief Electoral Commissioner (CEC) and National Returning Officer (NRO) of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone, Mohamed K. Konneh in which Dr. Julius Maada Bio of SLPP received 56.16% votes while Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara of APC got 41.17%.
Speaking in Freetown on Wednesday 19th July, 2023 on Democracy Radio 98.1 ‘Gud Morning Salone’ daily talk show, Rev. James Lahai indicated that the inconsistency in the result announced is between the two giant contestants, Dr. Julius Maada Bio and Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara.
He said the error falls within the results announced for President Julius Maada Bio.
Rev. Lahai admonished ECSL to take legal steps against his institution NEW, if they have stepped behind their limit adding the latter’s job is to let voters have confidence and to know that people are monitoring the process.
He added that publishing the polling stations results by the ECSL Boss will dispute NEW’s election projection result and failing to publish the results is a clear indication that the ECSL has denied voters their right, adding that ECSL should publish in order to verify.
Asked if NEW is mandated to publish election results, he replied that their institution’s responsibility is to report the outcome of their observation but not to publish.
He said that all other presidential candidates results are consistent with NEW’s projection.
He continued that the inconsistency is at variance with voters’ turnout, adding that their sampling helped to get information in real time and that the Process Result Verification Tallying (PRVT) is not a surprise and they brought 450 umbrella body organizations to sensitize them about the PRVT process.
According to him NEW deployed 750,000 observers in over 11,000 polling stations.
