Kids Advocacy Network (KAN) has announced that Dr. Jewel Howard Taylor, former Vice President of Liberia, will serve as Distinguished Guest of Honor at the Tenth Annual National Girls Empowerment Forum in Freetown.
The event is set for October 10 to 14, with the official opening on October 11 at the Sierra Leone Parliament. This year’s forum will be jointly led under the patronage of Dr. Taylor and Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Madam Fatima Maada Bio.
KAN’s Executive Director, Edmond Alim B. Fornah, said Dr. Taylor’s participation represents a milestone in the forum’s history. He praised her for her lifelong work promoting education, women’s rights, and political participation across Africa. “Her presence will inspire the girls and show them that leadership is within their reach,” Fornah noted.
Over the past decade, the National Girls Empowerment Forum has become one of the most influential platforms for mentoring young girls in Sierra Leone. Each year, hundreds of participants gather for leadership training, mentorship sessions, and open discussions with policymakers and professionals. The program helps equip girls with skills, confidence, and opportunities to take part in decision-making within their schools and communities.
This year’s forum carries added significance as it marks its tenth anniversary. Organizers say the milestone reflects a decade of consistent progress in supporting girls’ ambitions. Many past participants have gone on to excel in different fields, crediting their success to the guidance and encouragement they received through the initiative.
Dr. Taylor’s involvement is expected to elevate the forum’s visibility beyond Sierra Leone, drawing attention to the shared struggles and achievements of women across West Africa. Known for her outspoken advocacy for education and gender equality, she has long been a role model for young women aspiring to leadership.
First Lady Fatima Maada Bio’s role also adds weight to the event. Through her “Hands Off Our Girls” campaign, she has worked tirelessly to combat early marriage, sexual violence, and barriers to education. Her continued support reflects the government’s commitment to advancing the rights and wellbeing of women and girls.
As preparations intensify, anticipation is building among young participants and partners.
The Tenth National Girls Empowerment Forum is expected not only to celebrate progress but also to renew the call for greater investment in creating opportunities for every girl to succeed.
