Citizens are increasingly alarmed by the troubling developments under the current SLPP administration, as the nation appears to be in a state of uncertainty and decline.
One of the sectors drawing the most concern is education, which is said to be deteriorating rapidly. Once proudly referred to as the “Athens of West Africa,” Sierra Leone’s education system from basic to tertiary level is now seen by many as failing, with little to show in terms of progress or reform.
The opposition Chief Whip, Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara has remained vocal and persistent in exposing what he describes as egregious actions by the government across various sectors, including agriculture, education, health and infrastructure.
In a recent revelation, he disclosed that staff quarters belonging to Fourah Bay College one of the oldest universities in West Africa are reportedly being put up for sale. He emphasized that such actions threaten to further degrade the already declining learning environment.
While the university administration claims the quarters are being sold to former staff members, the opposition Whip argues that this move is indefensible. He stressed that these properties do not belong to individuals but to the state and selling them undermines public interest. According to him, this decision goes against the will of the citizens and must be resisted.
The lawmaker further expressed concern over what he described as the government’s lack of foresight, noting that there are no plans to replace the state properties being sold. He warned that such practices could lead to the mortgage of all government assets in the long term.
In his conclusion, the Whip called the situation unacceptable and urged all relevant authorities to take a firm stand in defending the university and preserving the learning environment for future generations.
