Information reaching Africa24 sports bureau has discovered that the Leone Rock Premier League, previously recognized as the Sierra Leone Premier League, has failed to secure a spot among the top men’s football leagues in Africa for 2023.
This is according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).
IFFHS is an organisation that chronicles the history and records of association football, founded in 1974 by Alfredo Poge in Leipzig.
It rates the competitive edge of various leagues and for the rating their current performances. And the Italian Serie A is the global strongest league, while Egypt tops Africa’s best team list and is rated 20 in the world.
Meanwhile, Morocco’s Botola League follows Egypt closely behind, while Algeria, Tunisia, South Africa, and Tanzania fills out the top five.
Remarkably, Nigeria secures the seventh spot, with Angola, Zambia, and Cote d’Ivoire being the only other West African countries’ leagues to crack the top 10.
And soccer pundits have expressed serious dismay with regards the woeful structure of the Sierra Leone Premier League over the years, noting that the output of the league is highly substandard.
Adding that, at the moment, although the league is playing but more needs to be done in order to improve the standard of the tournament to be able to meet global expectations.
