The Epilepsy Association of Sierra Leone have recently held a press briefing at the Hotel 5-10 to acquaint journalists about the status of the association and by extension how epilepsy is treated.
The theme: Inter-sectorial Global Action plan 2022-2031, at the briefing was meant to domesticate the said policy on global action against the disease.
In his keynote address, the Executive Director (EASL) Mr. Max Bangura gave an historical background of epilepsy.
He said among other things that epilepsy is always passive to be seen as demonic and which is not true.
He added that epilepsy has a stigma by way of people always pointing at the person who is suffering from the sick.
He further stated that the association has about 3,500 health workers nationwide and 23 epilepsy clinics nationwide.
Mr. went further to say that there are 20 types of epilepsies and that because of its stigma, it has affected a lot of school-going children who have been forced to leave school.
He added that epilepsy is not a transferable disease, and that it can affect somebody for a period lasting just a moment of unconciseness.
He further disclosed that World Health Organization (WHO) is supporting the association immensely together with other bodies.
In conclusion, Mr, Bangura, also stated that about 85,000 persons are with epilepsy disease in the country.
